Evaluating the Impact of Educational Radio Campaigns among Rural Farmers in Africa using SMS Surveys

Case StudyDigital to Tackle Wicked Problems 04:00 PM - 04:20 PM (Africa/Accra) 2024/03/19 16:00:00 UTC - 2024/03/19 16:20:00 UTC
An overview of GeoPoll's evaluation, using SMS surveys in 6 African countries, of the impact of radio campaigns that aim to improve agricultural practices among rural farmers. The focus will be on why and how the tech-based solution was implemented.
SMS is an excellent platform for collecting survey data in less affluent populations, in terms of cost, timelines & respondent experience. Digital delivery of agricultural advice to smallholder farmers in Ghana and beyond

Case StudyDigital to Tackle Wicked Problems 04:25 PM - 04:45 PM (Africa/Accra) 2024/03/19 16:25:00 UTC - 2024/03/19 16:45:00 UTC
CABI have developed digital advisory tools to support smallholder farmers across Africa and Asia, including those developed through the PlantwisePlus programme. We will present learnings from these tools and gendered agricultural extension in Ghana.
Co-development of tools and feedback channels from extension providers enabled tools to be integrated into local extension delivery. However, challenges remain to ensure long-term uptake and use of tools, particularly by women, and sustainable business models to maintain free access by smallholder farmers. Multimode delivery of advice is vital.
Farmers can now access a wealth of scientific information gathered by experts worldwide, peer-reviewed and shared on easy-to-use, communicative platforms, which complement existing agricultural extension services.
